Parque das Nações District Tourist Guide

Located in the oriental part of the city, Parque das Nações is just 3 km from the airport and 9 km from Lisbon’s historic center.

Parque das Nações, located on the northeastern shore of the Tejo estuary, was once an industrial area that was transformed into a stage for Expo 1998. Today, it is an important business area and one of the city’s most desirable residential neighborhoods. Although it may seem a little far from the center, it is easily accessible by a short metro ride. This modern neighborhood contrasts with the historic appearance of central Lisbon, offering a unique mix of gleaming skyscrapers and relaxing views along the river. Once a humble industrial area, it is now a thriving urban center with contemporary architecture and activities that delight locals and tourists alike, filling days and nights with unforgettable experiences.

Best Things to Do and See in Parque das Nações

Dive into Lisbon's Oceanarium

The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the largest aquariums globally, holding 5 million liters of seawater. Its innovative design brings together the habitats of the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Antarctic oceans. It has over 30 aquariums and houses 8,000 animals from 500 species, including sharks, tropical fish, and penguins. The building is surrounded by water, which gives it the appearance of an island in the ocean. It is a must-see for anyone who wants to explore the diversity of the oceans and understand the importance of marine conservation.

Ride the Expo Cable Car

Enjoy panoramic views of Parque das Nações aboard the Expo Cable Car. This cable car, or gondola, offers breathtaking views as it glides over the riverside promenade between the Vasco da Gama Tower and the Oceanarium. Each cabin accommodates approximately eight people for a fun-filled ride at a height of 30 meters along the Tejo River. The Lisbon Cable Car takes approximately 10 minutes and offers a unique view of local attractions. You can also take advantage of a 10% discount with the Lisboa Card.

Explore Lisbon's Science Hub

Located next to the Oceanarium, the Pavilion of Knowledge is an interactive and educational museum that offers a unique scientific learning experience. With innovative exhibits and hands-on activities, the Pavilion captivates children and adults alike, allowing them to explore everything from the latest technological developments to the scientific foundations of natural mysteries. Experience the gravity of the moon, build electrical circuits and defy the laws of physics on a six-meter bicycle. A must for a fascinating experience in Lisbon.

Win at Lisbon's Casino

Opened in 2006, Casino Lisboa is a younger, more contemporary version of Europe’s largest casino in Estoril. In addition to the 28 gaming tables and 1100 slot machines typical of any casino, it offers a large, minimalist space for food and drink. An auditorium presents national and international shows, and there are also performances in the rotating “Arena Lounge”. Try your luck or enjoy a unique night on the town, exploring not only the gaming options but also the restaurants, bars and regular art exhibits.

Rise Above Lisbon

The 140-meter Vasco da Gama Tower is the tallest building in Lisbon. Originally built as an observation tower with panoramic elevators, it was converted into a hotel in 2013. The top deck, which offers panoramic views of the river, the Vasco da Gama Bridge and the entire Parque das Nações, now houses a Michelin-starred restaurant. Its sailboat-inspired architecture is a reminder of Vasco da Gama’s voyages to India in the 15th century. Although currently closed to the public, the tower remains one of the city’s most impressive landmarks, visible as you stroll along the riverfront.

Enjoy Nature at Parque Tejo

Discover Parque Tejo, located in the northern part of Parque das Nações, with more than 80 hectares of gardens and lawns along the banks of the Tejo River. This green and peaceful space is ideal for walks, sports and family picnics. Whether walking, cycling or skateboarding, enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of the park, which also offers unique opportunities for bird watching, including flamingos at low tide. A relaxing and authentic getaway away from the conventional tourist areas.

Admire Lisbon's Iconic Gare

The Gare do Oriente is a monumental train station that enchants visitors with its shapes inspired by ocean waves, forest trees and the arches of a Gothic cathedral. Built for Expo 1998, the station houses train, metro and bus terminals, providing central access to transportation. Upon exiting the metro, passengers are greeted by contemporary works of art on large tile panels, a unique expression of “underground art”. Gare do Oriente is a pivotal point in Lisbon, serving as a vital hub for trains, buses and the metro, providing an unforgettable architectural and transportation experience.
